SF Science Fiction Showcase Brings Filmmakers and Fans Together in San Francisco
The SF Science Fiction Short Film Showcase brought filmmakers, actors and science-fiction fans together at San Francisco’s Marina Theatre on September 13 for an afternoon of award-winning films, filmmaker conversations and audience participation.
More than 170 attendees came to the theatrical Showcase, which featured a curated selection of award-winning science-fiction short films from the San Francisco Science Fiction Short Film & TV Awards. Filmmakers and members of their teams joined the audience for the screenings, with several traveling to San Francisco to take part in the event.
Following the films, participating filmmakers took the stage for an informative and lively panel discussion covering the inspiration behind their projects, the challenges of producing independent science fiction, working with new filmmaking technologies, bringing ambitious ideas to the screen on independent budgets, and what comes next for their films and careers. Award recipients in attendance were also presented with their official medals.
The audience had a role in the awards as well, voting at the theater for their favorite films of the Showcase. The 2026 SF Science Fiction Showcase Audience Awards went to:
First Place — ABDUCTED
Second Place — BATTLE OF LA
Third Place — FORCE FIVE: WELCOME TO THE BOOM SQUAD
Fourth Place (Tie) — DEALING WITH TIME and ECHOES OF DARKNESS
The afternoon continued after the final credits with an informal after-screening gathering at Bar Darling, where filmmakers, guests and members of the Awards community had an opportunity to continue the conversations outside the theater.
The San Francisco event also demonstrated the possibilities for bringing curated collections of award-winning science-fiction shorts to audiences beyond the traditional festival and awards cycle. Following the response to the Showcase, the Awards are exploring opportunities for future theatrical showcases in other cities, bringing selected films and filmmakers to new audiences.
For the filmmakers whose work has been part of the San Francisco Science Fiction Short Film & TV Awards over the past several years, the Showcase represents another step in the Awards’ continuing goal: not simply recognizing outstanding work, but helping exceptional short-form science fiction continue to be seen, discussed and discovered.
