SF Chefs. Food. Wine. Highlight Reel – Lick My Spoon

We weren’t there, but the Lick My Spoon has a great highlights reel from the first SF Chefs. Food. Wine. event in August:
To quote Mayor Gavin Newsom, “Aspen, eat your heart out.”

An epic event 2 ½ years in the making, SF Chefs. Food. Wine. was like a food-lover’s Disneyland with approximately 200 of the Bay Area’s finest chefs, 70 wineries, and mixologists aplenty strutting their stuff.

Over the past four days, Union Square was transformed into a playground of tastings, seminars, and demonstrations from a who’s who list of culinary legends, rising stars, artisans, and experts.

Ahh, the good old days…when food events were fun, tasty and a good value.
Great to see everything old is new again. We’ll be there next year, we hope!

Pelosi’s Secret Weapon in Health Care Debate: Chocolate

According to the New York Times:

In recent days, Ms. Pelosi and other Democratic leaders have experienced extraordinary tumult as they weathered criticism of the legislation from the fiscally conservative Blue Dog Coalition on the right, and then from more progressive lawmakers who revolted against some of the compromises made to appease the Blue Dogs.

“You’ve had difficult meetings all week,” a reporter said. “Can you tell us about your methods to reach consensus?”

In an unguarded moment, Ms. Pelosi, whose deft political maneuvers catapulted her through the ranks of the House Democratic leadership to make her the first woman speaker in United States history, shared her secret.

“Chocolate,” she said.

And she was only half-kidding. Ms. Pelosi, who represents San Francisco, keeps stashes of Ghirardelli chocolate squares strategically placed throughout her suite of offices in the Capitol.

That’s San Francisco style politics … use gourmet foods to put your foes at ease.

Don’t be Fooled by Newspaper Profits

Don’t be Fooled by Newspaper Profits, says paidContent

In three of the four, the newspaper publishers’ profitability was based on the aggressive cost-cutting all have taken over the past year (the NYTCo benefited from a favorable tax charge). As Outsell’s Ken Doctor notes, each of the four all sliced expenses between 20 and 29 percent. “The results of the past week primarily shows that expense control has kicked in,” said Alan D. Mutter. “The industry is wondering if newspapers have hit bottom and will stabilize.”

But it’s pretty likely that this “return to profitability” is only temporary, as more drastic changes are sure to come. Even if the economy turns around, think of the past week’s earnings as a small break from the pain the newspaper industry is going through.

So much for that whiff of hope, or is it?

One of the innovations of the Obama campaign of 2008 had a surprising culinary angle that took him from table to table across the nation. The result is a unique view of this American candidate for president – from a culinary perspective.
