ARTISAN PERFUME AWARDS: 2015

An annual Juried Awards competition rewards the Top Artisan, Niche, and Custom Fragrances of the Year.

Products from across the country were entered into this competition and sent to a panel of judges located throughout North America, who reviewed and voted on which they consider to be the “Top Artisan Fragrances of the Year.”

In addition, the three “Top Artisan Perfumer” award winners from this competition are given the title, “Official Fragrance Partner of the TASTE AWARDS.”

SELECTED JUDGES COMMENTS

For me a tie between En Voyage Untitled and Tambela’s Dark Moon Rose. I know Shelley’s perfumes but had never tried Tambela’s but want to try more. En Voyage’s Untitled is exquisite and complex, a surprise at every stage of dry down. It was even better on skin – intense, always evolving and intoxicating. Dark Moon Rose from Tambela unfolds like a symphony – a bit minty and fresh at first, but then becomes spicy and warm and rosy. The rose note comes out more on the skin. Even though this is a big, showy perfume, it stays close to skin and is just delightful.

For a beautiful finish my favorite was Cognoscenti 30. The one that intrigued me the most was Envoyage Untitled.

Flight by Wax Poetic Fragrances is simply beautiful. It is light and airy but it has so much depth and balance. it is a fragrance for all seasons and I would highly recommend wearing it in a cooler evening in the summer and coming into the Fall season because the scent wrafts in the air and lingers.

Chef Helen Roberts is the Culinary Development and Public Relations manager of Kikkoman Sales USA, Inc., and has been with the company for more than 33 years. She currently oversees Kikkoman’s Test Kitchen including the development and testing of a wide variety of on-trend Asian, American and international recipes for home cooks. Before moving into her current position, she spent 25 years in product development for Kikkoman. Growing up in an African-American home in Brooklyn, Roberts learned not only Southern-style home cooking and traditional American dishes but also a mix of ethnic cuisine such as Caribbean, Italian and Jewish. With her lively personality and easy-going approach to great home cooking, Roberts has made frequent television and Internet appearances. She was recently invited to the White House to participate in Michelle Obama’s “Chefs Move to Schools” program, which is part of the First Lady’s Let’sMove! campaign aimed at solving the childhood obesity epidemic. Roberts is partnering with other members of the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) to support the “Chefs Move to Schools” and Junior Leagues’ Kids in the Kitchen initiative. Roberts is a graduate of the California Culinary Academy and has studied at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. She also studied traditional Mexican culinary techniques at Seasons of my Heart cooking school in Oaxaca, Mexico. In 2014 Chef Helen was named President of the prestigious Les Dames D’Escoffier (LDEISF) and serves on the Board of Directors of IACP.

Mary Orlin is the staff wine writer for the Bay Area News Group. Her wine stories and bi-monthly wine column “Behind the Label” run in the weekly “Eat Drink Play” section of the San Jose Mercury News, Oakland Tribune and Contra Costa Times. She is a James Beard Award and Emmy Award-winning wine TV producer and writer. Mary is a Certified Sommelier and WSET Advanced Certified with Merit. Mary is also blends writing about wine and fragrance on her blog WineFashionista. Her article on wine and perfume pairing, “Uncommon Scents,” was published in the September 2015 issue of Tasting Panel magazine.
