City Roots releases New Flavors and New Mission-Led Craft Cider Brand

City Roots from Mass. Bay Brewing Company has a line of crisp ciders in a range of tasty flavors that celebrate both the urban drinker and the rural sources.  Made exclusively from fresh-pressed apples, they are typically dry and naturally gluten free.

Current flavors include:

  • Original Dry: this year-round flagship cider is carefully fermented to produce a clean, balanced flavor profile with just a light touch of tartness and sweetness. Filtered bright for a crisp effervescence, Original Dry is refreshingly all-purpose. Available in 16 and 12-ounce cans or kegs. No added sugar. 9 grams sugar, 13 grams carbs.
  • Rosé Cider: this summer seasonal release combines the crisp base of fresh-pressed apples with a healthy dose of hibiscus flowers for a naturally tart and floral cider. Bubbly, tropical, and vibrantly pink, Rosé is a tropical take on a traditional dry cider. Available in 16-ounce cans or kegs. 9 grams sugar, 13 grams carbs.
  • Pumpkin Cider: a second seasonal release—this one for the fall—that combines two autumn favorites: fresh-pressed apples and pumpkin, with some subtle seasonal spice added in for good measure. Pumpkin uses all real spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and clove) and pumpkin puree to create an apple-forward flavor profile that is both subtle and balanced. Available in 16-ounce cans or kegs. 9 grams sugar, 13 grams carbs.

At Mass. Bay Brewing Company, we’re all about innovating in new categories, and contributing to the communities we call home,” said Dan Kenary, CEO and co-founder of Mass. Bay Brewing Company. “City Roots helps us do both – establish a brand dedicated entirely to the cider category, while giving our fans something new to enjoy, and a reason to feel good about it.”

Says City Roots, “After apples from local New England orchards are fresh-pressed for cider, the apple pulp gets sent back to local farmers to feed their pigs to help eliminate waste. Then once the cider is packed, sold and sipped, a portion of all City Roots sales will be directed to local environmental groups in the area where the cider is sold, with the goal of bettering outdoor urban areas

The brand launch includes a partnership with 1% for the Planet, a New England-based organization with a global mission to bring financial support to environmental nonprofits. Through this partnership, 1 percent of all City Roots sales will be directed to local environmental groups in the area where the cider is sold, with the goal of bettering outdoor urban areas.

“REBBL With A Cause ” Short Food Film Released, hosted by Ruby Rose

San Francisco-based REBBL beverages brand has released an eye-opening and inspirational short film, hosted by actor Ruby Rose, about sustainable food supply chain sourcing, and helping reduce the causes of human trafficking. The film serves as an origin story about how the REBBL brand was created to address this issue, rather than acting as an add-on mission.

Says REBBL, “Solutions to human trafficking and many of the largest challenges facing our planet lie in finding ways to use business as a force for good. Rather than just a product with a mission, this is the story of a mission – to eradicate the root cause of human slavery – with a product. [This] is also a story of an organic ingredient, the mighty Brazil Nut, one of over 70 that REBBL sources from around the world to help uplift communities.” The film follows the REBBL team deep into the Peruvian Amazon to learn how one community has been positively affected by the brand’s impact sourcing efforts.

Initial assumptions might be that this is just another branded promotional film, but that is not the case. Many viewers have commented on how it has completely opened their eyes about how and why they can have a larger role in managing the sources and conditions of their own food, as well as be more mindful of its origin.

Travel: The DOUGLAS Hotel in Vancouver is Luxurious and Eco-Friendly

The DOUGLAS – a first-to-market Autograph Collection Hotel in downtown Vancouver – is challenging guests to take advantage of “Conserve Together”, an initiative that incorporates sustainability into overnight stays to support the re-population of Canadian forests.

The DOUGLAS, an Autograph Collection Hotel, masterfully reconnects people and place, while seamlessly introducing nature into an elegant, urban environment.

Creating a balanced dialogue between nature and city, the DOUGLAS pays homage to the Douglas firs that laid the foundation for Vancouver’s thriving economy. With a focus on reconnecting people and place, the DOUGLAS strives to implement a sustainability program that encourages travelers to prioritize the environment. “Conserve Together” promotes waste reduction by challenging guests to opt out of daily housekeeping service, for two consecutive days. For each non-housekeeping day, guests are rewarded with 500 Marriott Bonvoy Bonus Points or a tree planted on their behalf; on every third day, the guest’s room is serviced and/or a wellness check is performed. The option is open to all visitors regardless of rate plan or booking method; guests must stay a minimum of two nights to take advantage of the offer.

The DOUGLAS staff encourages every visitor not only to participate in “Conserve Together”, but also to choose tree planting over bonus Marriott Bonvoy points. For every guest who selects the former, the hotel promises to double the number of trees planted. To further personalize the initiative, guests are invited to dedicate their tree to someone special (or to themselves). The dedication will appear on an interactive map depicting a cartoon forest with labels pointing to each guest’s tree.

Conserve Together” trees are planted in the Ann and Sandy Cross Conservation Area near Calgary, Alberta by Carbon Farmer, a partner of the DOUGLAS working to repopulate Canadian forests. As of April 1, the DOUGLAS and Carbon Farmer have planted 1,114 trees, creating 4,554 square metres of new forest.

“Earth Day is an important reminder that although environmental preservation is a global responsibility, each person can make a real difference,” said Sean Outerbridge, Director of Room Operations for the DOUGLAS. “Thanks to ‘Conserve Together’, every guest passing through the DOUGLAS will able to support our commitment to making cities greener and forests stronger.”
