How to Keep Your Clear Transparent Eyeglasses Sparkling

Having a pair of eyeglasses with clear frames is a very stylish choice, but they have a downside.  It is that dirt, dust and oil trapped between the lenses and the frames is hard to clean, and is also visible. But, we have some tips.

To safely and effectively clean transparent eyeglass frames (and the lenses), especially when there’s accumulated oil and dirt, follow these steps:

Best Cleaning Method (Safe for Frames & Lenses)

What You’ll Need:

  • Mild dish soap (free of lotions, like Dawn or similar)

  • Lukewarm water

  • A clean microfiber cloth

  • Optional: a soft toothbrush

Step-by-Step Cleaning:

  1. Rinse with Lukewarm Water:

    • Gently rinse the glasses under lukewarm (not hot!) water to remove dust and debris that could scratch the lenses.

  2. Apply Mild Soap:

    • Put a small drop of mild, lotion-free dish soap on your fingers.

    • Gently rub both sides of the lenses and the entire frame, focusing on oily areas like the nose pads and temples.

  3. Use a Soft Toothbrush for Frames:

    • For gunk in tight spots (like hinges or nose pads), use a soft-bristled toothbrush with soap.

    • Be gentle to avoid scratching or loosening any components.

  4. Rinse Thoroughly:

    • Make sure all soap is rinsed off—leftover residue can cause smudging.

  5. Dry with a Microfiber Cloth:

    • Pat and wipe dry with a clean microfiber cloth. Avoid paper towels or your shirt—they can scratch lenses.

Tips & Warnings:

  • Avoid: household cleaners (Windex, vinegar, alcohol, bleach), especially if lenses have coatings (like anti-glare or blue light filters)—they can degrade them.

  • Don’t use hot water: it can warp plastic frames or damage lens coatings.

  • Don’t air dry: can leave water spots, especially on coated lenses.

Optional: Lens Cleaning Spray

Use a store-bought lens cleaning solution (labeled safe for coated lenses) for quick maintenance between washes.
